CNDAT – Canadian Neurodiversity Affirming Therapists Facebook group

For Social Workers and Psychotherapists

Theme: Youth: Queer and Neurodivergent

Robyn Livingston, Scattergram Psychotherapist and Facilitator of *The ND Room*, a group for queer and neurodivergent youth in grades seven to twelve, will facilitate our discussion on working with this population. We know that neurodivergent people are three to six times more likely to be gender divergent. How do tweens and teens grapple with these intersecting identities? What do we need to be aware of to support them and their family members? Come and share your thoughts, ideas and strategies. New and past members are all welcome.

This is a Canadian community of therapists and affiliated social and healthcare providers (including Social Workers, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, students, etc) who serve the neurodiverse population or want to learn about neurodiversity in order to better serve their neurodivergent clients.

According to the neurodiversity paradigm, Autism and other forms of neurodivergence (e.g. Dyslexia, ADHD, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Tourette’s, etc) as naturally occurring variants in neurobiology.
We are here, as humans who occupy different locations on the neurotypical/atypical spectrum, to network, collaborate, share referrals, support each other, explore treatment modalities, and aid in bringing the neurodiversity paradigm to mainstream professions and the general public.

We share a commitment to educating neurotypical service providers about the harm that is done by imposing neurotypical norms and treatment modalities on neurodivergent people. In our work as/with neurodivergent individuals, we seek to build self-awareness, self-acceptance, and skills for self-advocacy.

N.B. We do not support Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) as a valid treatment for Autism. ABA practitioners are welcome to participate in this group provided that they refrain from explaining or defending ABA as a treatment modality.

Current Group Dates: Second Friday of every month.
